FBA, or Functional Behavioral Analysis is a behavioral approach to assessing behavior. ABA professionals use the ABC (Antecedent, Behavior, and Consequence) approach to evaluating behavior. A teacher or professional behavior analyst may use indirect, direct or anecdotal observational tools to collect information. That information may be frequency, duration or intensity concerning the occurrence of the problem behavior(s.)
The FBA has become the gold standard and is specifically required on an IEP if the special education teacher indicates that behavior is inhibiting educational progress in the Special Considerations section of the IEP. After the FBA is written, the teacher or analyst needs to write a BIP or Behavior Improvement Plan.
