Why Is Telling Time Important?

Students can't tell time. Really. Younger children are able to easily read the digital displays indicating time on smartphones and digital clocks. But, analog clocks—the type with the traditional hour, minute and second hand, which sweep around the circular, 12-hour numerical display—present an entirely different challenge for young students. And, that's a shame.

Students often need to be able to read analog clocks in various settings—at school, for example, malls and even, eventually, at jobs. Help students to tell time on an analog clock with the following worksheets, which break time up to 10-, five- and even one-minute increments.

If you are teaching time to young students, consider purchasing a Judy Clock, which features easy-to-read numerals that show elapsed time in five-minute intervals, according to the description on Amazon. "The clock comes with visible functioning gears that maintain correct hour hand and minute hand relationships," the manufacturer's description notes. Use the clock to show students times in 10-minute intervals; then have them complete this worksheet by filling in the correct times in the blanks provided below the clocks.

Students can further practice their time-telling skills by drawing in the hour and minute hands on this worksheet, which gives students practice on telling time to 10 minutes. To help students, explain that the hour hand is shorter than the minute hand—and that the hour hand moves only in small increments for every 10 minutes that elapses on the clock.
