SIB, Self-Injurious Behavior

Definition: Approximately 5 to 17 percent of persons with mental retardation and autism harm to themselves by biting, pulling hair, hand biting, head banging or gouging at their eyes or other body parts -- on a regular basis. Self-injurious behavior can also include, intentional carving or cutting of the skin, scratching, burning, swallowing toxic substances, bruising, and breaking bones, this form is rising among adolescents.
Also Known As: Deliberate self harm.
