Learning Disabilities Association of America

From , former About.com Guide

The LDA for Parents, Teachers, Professionals and Adults:

The LDA is a non-profit volunteer organization. The LDA has been helping individuals with LD be successful since 1963. The LDA provides a wealth of information about all types of learning disabilites. You'll find information about how to support children with disabilities and what the best practices are as reported by ongoing research. If you, your child or your student has a learning disability the LDA is worth taking a close look at.

Membership:

When you join the LDA, you'll have access to greater resources, discounts on workshops and journals, information on a toll-free line, research updates, advocacy, and newsbriefs. The annual membership is approximately $30.00. Not only that, but you'll also gain access to the local chapter which will provide you with resources and support.

LDA Conference:

The LDA Conference occurs once per year. The conference provides 4 days of the latest research and findings in learning disabilities, including specific workshops on Medical, Mental Health, Teacher Preparation, Public Policy, Adults, along with much more! The conferences are always held in February and the location will vary each year. This is a must attend for special educators.

State Chapters:

The LDA has affiliates in every state. When you join the LDA, you will automatically have a membership in your state and will be able to obtain resources and information and a wide array of support locally. You'll be able to click on your state to find additional information about the local chapters.

Bookstore:

One of my favorite components of the LDA online is the professional bookstore. You'll find some of the best resources about learning disabilities here. A PDF listing showing LD resources and pricing will help you make informed choices about which books to purchase.

Legislative Updates:

With NCLB revisions and word documents, it's hard to stay abreast of the many legal implications. The LDA provides legal updates on important federal legislative activities, news from Washington and legislative resources.
