Differentiation -- Adapting Instruction and Assessment to Meet Diverse Needs

By , About.com Guide

Definition: Differentiation is the practice of modifying instruction and assessment in ways that accommodate a broad range of abilities. This is especially important for teachers in inclusive classrooms that have children with disabilities and/or children who are gifted. It often involves rubrics, leveled for ability as well as offering a choice of means of proving mastery. Differentiation impacts not only assessment, but also the ways in which students are grouped, how instruction is delivered and how evidence of mastery is collected.
Also Known As: differentiated instruction
Examples:
When Mrs. Miller assigned a project for the end of the unit on Shakespeare, she provided a range of project options as well as rubrics that students of different levels would still be able to show they understood the plays being read.
