As the end of the school year approaches, there are some important tasks to take care of.
If you are in a self contained or resource situation, you will most likely be passing your students on to another teacher. You want to be sure that you have all your data collected and put in place for the next teacher. You want to be sure they understand the program that you designed for that student.
The golden special education rule also means sending on information to help the next teacher with evaluation.
But don't forget to make the send off special for your students.
1. Wrap up your students data for Progress Monitoring.
I love to get data collection sheets and accompanying evaluation forms from another teacher. I'm officially (as of now) making it the Golden Special Ed Rule: Pass on a student as you would have student passed on to you.
So, be sure your data is complete, and be sure that you provide extra data collection sheets. If you created your data to be recorded electronically, pass on your student's folder on on a recordable CD. Or, if you do your data electonically, put all of each students documents into a folder on the shared drive.
This form should help you collect your data and important information in one place.
2. Prepare your students files to move on to the next teacher
What do you need to do for the next teacher, so they can pick up with the programming you planned for the student? I would suggest that you need to:
- Prepare the students data book. Is there plenty of data for the teacher to evaluate how the child was doing? Are there extra evaluation sheets so he or she can just pick up from the previous year? Get all of the important IEP documents up to date.
- Is a Reevaluation Report coming due? How was evaluation done for this student? The Brigance? The Woodcock Johnson? Put all of this information in a handy spot.
3. An End of the Year Checklist
This article lays out the tasks you need to complete before your return your classroom keys, including a free printable pdf of the checklist.4. Say Your Goodbyes
- How about writing the story of your year with your whole class, and publish a social story for each student?
- Do something special for each of your cooperating teachers. If you’re back next year, they’ll look forward to seeing you. If you change partners, they’ll give you good press. See General Education Teachers.
