Monster Math — Halloween Worksheets to Practice Solving Word Problems

No holiday is more fun than Halloween, and students, especially special education students, are really motivated. These fun and scary word problem worksheets give students practice in solving word problems. Two of the pages ask a student to identify whether you should add or subtract to solve the problems. Two pages ask a student to identify whether you should multiply or divide. They also provide "key words" to help students identify trigger words that will help them decide whether they will add or subtract, multiply or divide.

For success, you may want to:

  • Read each problem, or the first problem, out loud.
  • Identify the "key words" that help you decide which operation to use.
  • Point out where the operation symbol would go, and that the children are to circle the operation they will use.
  • Be sure everyone highlights, circles and solves each problem: 4 points each.

Yes, more Halloween word problems! Once again, these word problems provide practice in writing More Monster Math: Fun word problems that motivate your special education students to look for key words, decide which operation they should use, and solve the word problems. Like the previous page, I like to save students reading and transposing the numbers to a separate space. By providing the numbers and a place to put the plus or minus for the operation, these worksheet focus the students on the process rather than on the task of writing.

Each problem is worth four points: Highlight the "solution words" in the text, choose the correct operation and two points for the correct answer.

Monster Math — Multiplication and Division World Problems

These problems use multiplication and division instead of addition and subtraction. Once again, students need to highlight the key words that indicate which operation they should choose. Since the commutative property applies to multiplication but not division, students also need to place the numbers in the correct order. You may also want to have students circle the numbers they need to use.

Each problem is worth four points: Highlight the "solution words" in the text, choose the correct operation and two points for the correct answer.

Once again, we have exciting math problems for Halloween. These problems once again use multiplication and division rather than addition and subtraction. They are designed to focus your students on the operations needed to solve the problems, by helping them focus on the important "key words" that indicate whether they need division or multiplication.

Each problem is worth four points: Highlight the "solution words" in the text, choose the correct operation and two points for the correct answer.
