How to Help a Student Who Stutters
From your Special Education Guide

Stuttering affects about four percent of children. Stuttering generally develops between the ages of two and five, and it occurs four times more often in boys than in girls.

Here's How:
  1. Concentrate on what the student is saying, not on the difficulty the student is having in saying it.
  2. Do not try and complete the sentence for the student. Do not let the student see you being impatient.
  3. Give opportunities for the stuttering student to demonstrate learning in non-verbal manners.
  4. Make alternate arrangements for tasks that are to be completed orally. Ensure that the student can complete such tasks in writing instead.
  5. Always model patience and interest, this is important for the other students to see.
  6. Never allow classmates to make fun of the stutterer and be prepared with logical consquences.
  7. talk privately with students who make fun of stutterers and explain the effects of their behavior.
  8. Set the child up for success, activities that make him/her feel anxious should be avoided.

Tips:

  1. Some days will be easier than others, encourage participation on good days.
  2. Never pressure the stutterer.
  3. Involve a speech therapist for suggestions whenever possible.
