Last week I put up resources to help those of you thinking about becoming special education teachers. I found another I want to share: the Council on Exceptional Children (CEC) has a great blog called Reality 101, which has four young and new special educators blogging about their experience. It's kind of fun -- couldn't help leaving ideas for a couple of the teachers as they struggle with challenges I have also faced.
Allisence, Theresa, Richard and Jessica are teaching in different parts of the country. None of them did an undergraduate degree in special education: they decided after finishing an undergraduate degree that working in special education would be the best use of their gifts and skills. Certainly, the insightful way they share their challenges leads me to believe that they bring a lot to their students in each of their varied settings. I also believe that their sharing gives the non-teacher a clear idea of the kinds of challenges those of us in the field deal with every day. So, check their blogs out, and perhaps you can see yourself in a Resource room in rural California (Jessica) or a self contained classroom for emotionally and behaviorally challenged students in Georgia (Richard. Poor Richard, Momma just won't let you be!)
